Chapter 28

“What are you telling me, Valnikov?” Hollins demanded. They sat in the back area of a Greek diner in Neshaminy up in Bucks County northeast of the city limits. Both ordered coffee and toasted corn muffins. The changing shift from breakfast to lunch was not paying them much attention. It was bright and sunny but was still achingly cold as the Canadian high swept down across the northeast.

“If my people knew I was meeting you, I would be dead by nightfall and never found again,” Arkady replied. His bodyguard was otherwise occupied with Vlad again. Arkady had taken his Mercedes SUV to the gym and completely changed his clothes. He walked next door to the car rental agency and chose a nondescript SUV with tints. He now sat across from Hollins wearing his work out gear. He couldn’t be too careful with a GPS or bug being placed on his car or sown into his coat. Actually, the other leaders of the Russian group would be in agreement that Vlad needed to be stopped. “What is going on is horrible. Nobody wants all this killing, especially of civilians.”

“Thank you for saying that, Valnikov. I’m genuinely touched.” Hollins smirked.

“I am a businessman, Detective Hollins, and all this attention is bad for my business. If my international contacts think that I am working in the Wild West, they have less confidence that I can handle my end of any agreements.” Arkady was carefully laying out his position.

“Profits are down?” Hollins was dismissive.

“Yes, and you have a shooting war like you haven’t seen in your career. The police have been powerless to stop the killings. Your impotence must be embarrassing for your department.”

Hollins replied, “I’ve got to admit it, Valnikov, you have balls asking for this sit-down.”

“Detective Hollins, isn’t it in both our best interests that this war ends and things return to normal as soon as possible? I am not asking for anything personal from you. I expect you to do your job.”

“Damn right. I will come after you again and again and again until I get you.”

“Thank you for saying that, Hollins. That is exactly why I chose to meet with you. It is important that I know that I am talking to an honest cop. I also remember when you arrested me. You had a solid case against me; however, my friends talked to somebody who talked to somebody, and you know what happened.”

“All too well. It feels like yesterday that I found out that my best evidence against you was stolen from the evidence room during the trial.”

“I don’t know who the inside man is, but I think you will find out who it is if you keep looking into the murders at the gentlemen’s club and of the reporter. They are connected, I believe.”

The muffins arrived, both split in half, grilled with an unhealthy amount of butter slathered on top. Both men sat silently chewing and thinking. Fresh coffee was poured, and they were left alone again.

“I know what you are thinking, Detective.
